Fluffy White Stuff Falling From the Sky

We woke up to snow this morning! Yahoo! We LOVE the snow! It has been snowing since about 7 am this morning and its still snowing really hard now at 5 pm. Crazy snow. I have never seen it snow this much here in B'ham. At 11ish there was about 5 inches. Now there is 7-8 inches on our deck. We walked to a friends house and our tracks were covered an hour later on our way home. Adam just put the chains on the Nissan and is attempting to drive and play soccer. No wait.... here he comes....back in the house. He didn't even make it 100 yards before the chain fell off, a car tried to go around him and now the other car is stuck. It's gotta be bad for Adam not to play soccer! We probably won't have school tomorrow! A blessing and a pain. Snow days are always fun but making school up in June never is. Oh well... It's snowing!!!!

Here we are up in the snow at the Lower Mt. Baker Lodge, two weeks ago. Today has almost as much snow! Who knew we would have our own winter down here. I love it!

This is what our porch looked like this morning at about 9 am.

Brindzi was excited to play in the snow. She loves the snow. When we went out a couple hours later, her earlier tracks were all covered up.

On our way back from our friends house, Adam had Brindzi fetching snowballs and bounding in the snow.

She was quite tempted by the birds and chased a few down into the snowy ditch. She almost got lost in the snow drifts.

This is what our porch looked like at about 3 pm when we arrived back from our walk. Brindzi wanted to measure it herself.

Here is what it looks like now. We think it's a winter wonderland! I am sure the media is calling it "The Thanksgiving blizzard '06". I am so glad we drove back up yesterday and are not stuck in this mess on the Freeway. Western WA doesn't have enough snow removal equipment to deal with this much snow all at once.

We still LOVE Gryffin! Here he is all wrapped up in our Christmas ornament paper. We put up the Christmas tree today. It really did feel like Christmas. Cheesy Christmas music on the radio, snow falling outside, the smell of fir trees. Yep. Too bad it's still November.

Who's next???

Who will be next to get married? Who will be the first to first to have kids? What will our next milestones be? I went home to NH the other weekend for Sabe and Tom's wedding. It was a solo weekend. So this is Adventures of Erin! Another close friend gets married. Another amazingly creative and beautiful wedding. I love how my friends and I seem to have been able to have some of the most beautiful, unique, traditional, non-traditional, and fun weddings that I have ever been to. I wonder what will be next.

It was my first time back in NH in the fall since I left in Sept. of '97. Nine years ago! The weekend was a perfect fall weekend. Bright blue skies, cold crisp air, warm days, brilliant colors, and good times. I felt more homesick for NH than I have for a very long time. And yet, I love where I live now. I felt the struggle with loving where you came from and loving where you have gone. I think I love the memories from home and I know that living in NH wouldn't bring back those memories. Memories of family and friends and fun times. My 10 year high school reunion is this spring. I think that Sabe and I will make the treks from the NW to NH to reminisce our high school glory days. Think of what we have done in the 10 years since. Adam and I just had our 9 year (dating) anniversary yesterday. Nine years I have lived out here. Crazy...anyways... I have some pictures from Sabe and Tom's wedding. Enjoy!

Don't they look dashing in their rehearsal dinner wear! And boy was it cold!

We spent a very cold night getting our beauty sleep in a cabin on some back road in Weare. Good question!

Sabe looked so gorgeous in her grandmother's 1950's ball gown! A blushing bride in RED!!!

The fall colors, red dress, green grass, and blue skies were such amazing combinations.

Don't my parents look cute! Dad I love the hat!

Our beautiful mothers! Wow!

Mother and daughter. An important day for both of them!

As I said in my toast, I feel responsible for Sabe and Tom getting back together for the final time. Sabe did move out to Bellingham to live with me and Tom just happened to live in Seattle :-)
What a view from the dance floor!

My dad and placed 3rd in a crazy game of croquet. Adam would have been proud!

High school buddies!

Check out those boots!

And last but not least the grade A tree in Andover. Pretty Amazing!

How can you resist that face?

Ahhh Brindzi...How can you resist that face? Yep. Life with Brindzi is good. She is adapting to our world quite well. We have taken her all kinds of places around Bham. And have been trying to introduce her to as many people and situations as we can. Little children seem quite drawn to her. They hang on her, pull her ears, give her hugs, and she happily obliges. Our friend recently asked if we thought people came up to her and asked to pet her more than other dogs. As a proud new parent, of course I wanted to say "yes!" because she is so beautiful and wonderful but I really didn't know. I have never owned a dog so I am not sure how many people come up and pet people with Dogs... I know they like puppies but she is almost out of her puppy phase. I like to think that Adam and I are just really good dog parents and picked the perfect , cutest , most well behaved dog out there...But who really knows.

Here are some pics of our new family member. I still think we took more of Gryffin when we got him but we didn't have a website back then to share with all...We just tortured friends and family with our Gryffin album. Adam says, I just tortured them :-)

Adam is almost ready to admit that he loves her...I think the just doesn't want to admit it. What do you think?

Lounging on the grass at Neal's soccer game.

Brindzi love to play fetch...She just doesn't like to bring it back all the time or gets bored and we are left hanging.

Brindzi on top of the world near Mt. Baker. She is ready to take on the world!

Yum! Brindzi kisses...Even Adam isn't as adverse them now!

Lean and Tall. She has some really interesting coloring around her shoulders and rear area. Who knows where it came from... But people say its quite striking.

Brindzi

The votes are in, her personality has been observed, and her name has been chosen. Brindzi is our new pup's name! Adam has already shortened it to Brindz.

We have also learned some more about her habits. She is already very attatched to us and is excited to see us every morning and when we come home from work. She listens relatively well, especially when she is not too excited. Sitting, some staying, and laying down are all pretty understood commands. We have already trained her to sit at the door before we go outside. She even does it without us saying it. We are trying to work on stopping at the corner before crossing the street. So far we have made progress. Her walking on a leash is getting better too. She needs to get in better walking shape though. She is tired after a 1/2 hour walk. Adam and I are still getting used to our new morning routine; go outside, come inside, walk around 2 blocks, go back inside, eat breakfast, and then leave for work. All between 5:45-6:45 am. Yow!

The biggest hurdles we will have to overcome is her getting really excited when we come home, some small amounts of "mouthing", and chewing, oh yeah and the shedding (remembering to brush). So far she hasn't even attempted to pick up anything other than toys or bones to chew but boy does she chew them! She has already destroyed a hard rubber ball, a stuffed toy, and chewed through another toy. She just chomps on them while laying down on the floor. We are hoping to get into an obedience class. It will help us learn how to train her, it helps with the bond, and hopefully work towards being a really well behaved dog!

Yep. We are excited. She is excited.

Gryffin is a little annoyed and cautious but doing ok. They mostly avoid each other. Gryffin got brave one day and started playing with the end of her leash (she is still wearing it in the house). She got up and picked it up with her mouth and carried it closer to her! It was hilarious. I am sure that once they start to understand each other more and get used to each other, they will be good friends.

Keep posted for all the next new adventures!

New pal(s)

Two new additions to the family in the last ten days.

The first to arrive was our fancy new used car. It's a 2003 Volkswagon Jetta Wagon. We wanted a diesel, but those were few and far between. We got a good deal. But now we've found out that owning a car is like owning a house (or owning anything, probably), and that with it comes glitches, and funnies, and all sorts of good times. We drove it down to Seattle the other day to watch the Mariners beat the Red Sox. We got to experience some electrical hauntings, but everything seems fine now. We'll keep an eye on it.

Then today we drove down to Mount Vernon to check out a dog. We had looked at a few last week, but none quite met my approval. Erin would have brought them all home. That's why I came along.

Then today we drove back to Bellingham with a dog.

She's about one-and-a-half, is a straight-up mutt (a bit of lab, a bit of pointer, and a bit of everything else!), and is very mellow. She doesn't seem to bark, doesn't slobber, and hardly smells! The perfect dog! She is very submissive, and needs a lot of work on her confidence. She bonded right up with us, and liked Alice, but was very afraid and wary of a man walking down the street who came up to her. So some things to work on there.

Right now her name is Sasha. It's a fine name, but we think we want to change it. You can help us. Here are our top picks so far:
  • Quimby - from the Ramona and Beezus books by Beverly Cleary
  • Frisby - from Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
  • Kimball - for Sally Kimball, Encyclopedia Brown's tough-girl partner
  • Brindza - for Will Brindza, former Bellingham Bell player
  • Mia - for Mia Hamm, soccer superstar
  • Annie - from something I can't remember...just Annie
We're sort of leaning toward Brindza, or "Brindzy." What's she look like to you?

By the way, here's what we had for dinner the other night. Salmon and tomatoes skewered on rosemary twigs, with brown rice and Greek salad. Zow!

Finally! Some more pictures!

We've been back for almost a month, painted the house, bought a new car, and now we're finally finding time to update. Whew! So much for a soft landing.

Though our posts have generally kept up, we hadn't posted any pictures since Slovenjia. So that's where we'll start.
Here we have the beautiful town of Piran. It was a great place to stay and an awful place to get to. It's part of the "Slovenjian Riviera," on the Adriatic. We rolled in on Friday night, after taking the train from Postojna. There were supposed to be bike paths all the way in, but we lost them rather quickly. So we ended up on the main roads, along with all of Slovenjia. Imagine Highway 20 into Anacortes on a Friday night, or rush hour ferry traffic. The difference, of course, was that we were on our bikes, and everyone else was not. Yech. Lots of uncomfortably close calls.
On our way there we went through Portoroso. It was like one giant tourist resort. Thinking that the whole area might be like that, we wondered what we had gotten ourselves into. However, as you can see from the picture, Piran is a very nice little peninsula, with only one road that sort of skirts it and heads uphill. The buildings are packed together, the alleys are narrow and windy. It was much calmer than Portoroso, though still full of Slovenjian tourists. I may have told you this all before...

It was hot, though. We spent most of the day in the water, wishing for an umbrella. We did walk up to the fortress, though, and got our picture taken by a funny Croatian man.

We managed to find, and stay on, the bike path all the way from Piran to the Italian border. It was very nice, winding through farms and neighborhoods. Too bad we couldn't have stuck on it on the way in. This is a view back at Piran on our way out.

In Italy now, riding from Asti to Alba, our first day of riding. We stopped for lunch next to a town bocce court. Unfortunately, no little old Italian men playing...

Rolling into Alba, headed for the tourist information to find a place to stay. Alba was a very interesting town, with practically hundreds of medieval towers sprinkled all over. We were there on a Sunday and Monday, however, so it was rather quiet.

The view from La Morra of the vast vineyards of the Piedmont region. How did we get that view? By sweating! A lot! In Slovenjia, all the churches were on hills. In Italy, all the towns were.

Church/house with vineyard. I think this was on our way back down from La Morra.

You've already read the post that I wrote in this picture. It was called "Too damn hot." Now you have the benefit of enjoying my fleshy white upper arms. Too damn hot, indeed...

On our way to Acqui Terme from Alba, on our anniversary. We woke up early to beat the heat, but even in the morning shade was a refuge. Do you think they built those little shrines for the benefit of bike tourists?

In the Cinque Terre now, having left our bikes in Genova at the hotel. This is the view of the harbor in Riomaggiore, where we stayed for three nights.

Erin, Riomaggiore, and a prickly plant

Another view of Rio. We stayed in the red house at the top right of the picture. On the top floor. We walked a lot of stairs in Riomaggiore. A lot. Glad we didn't have to lug our bikes up there.

A top-down view of Rio, from the window of our room.

Manarola, as we near the end of our hike through the five towns. Long and hot.

Ah, the Via dell'Amore...

Lots of cats in the Cinque Terre. Along the trails there were cat feeding stations. These three found a comfy spot in Vernazza...I guess.

The hike sent us up and down and around. This is looking down on Vernazza.

Our Italian savior, Emanuele, who guarded our bikes while we were off vacationing, helped us find boxes, called us a taxi, made Erin coffee, helped us navigate the bus, and recommended a nice little curry/kabob/pizza spot. He helped us out so much. Things would have been much more difficult, and I would have gotten yelled at more, if he wasn't there. Lots more nice people in Italy than we expected. Not that we were expecting mean people. But we were often surprised by kindness and help.

Spending the night in London, on the swankiest bench in Heathrow. Our 18 hour stay was made easier thanks to finding Elizabeth, who was also hanging out, waiting for the same flight, as she had missed her scheduled departure. A lot of funny things are funnier with a third person laughing. And it was great to have someone to watch stuff during bathroom breaks, etc.

Back in the USA, with the bikes strapped tightly to the top of Bert's car. I didn't even take them out of the boxes for three days or so. Erin already returned hers for a speedier one. She was sad to see the Randonee go (almost 1000 miles of her life!), but it never quite gave her a good fit, and wasn't set up how she would have liked. We'll keep our eyes open for a new one, for the next tour.

What a trip! We had a great time, and being on bikes was a unique and interesting experience. Worth doing, and worth doing again. Hills are rough (but only half the time), but the perspective is incredible. Slow and pleasant. Things you just don't see or notice from a train or car. There were certainly times when the bikes were a pain (like, whenever we weren't riding them), but it was a great experience overall. Can't wait for the next one.

Thanks for following along! Keep coming back! We'll keep using this blog for all of our adventures.
